Romancing Scheherazade : John Barth and the one thousand and one night
This book is a reworked and updated version of a Ph.D. thesis (Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada). The external examiner of McGill University, wrote in his report that “Mr.Benaziza knows the material well, knows the scholarship already done in the field, and is aware of the theoretical and methodological implications of his work…. The thesis is as good as or better than some published work on Barth.”
By studying Barth’s indebtedness to the 1001 Nights, by analyzing the use of the frame-tale technique as a narrative strategy, and by tracing such use back to his earliest novels, the author of his book has attempted to provide a corrective to criticism that has not sensed the extent to which Barth’s writing career has been determined by his early reading of Richard Burton’s translation of The 1001 Nights.
The author focuses on Barth’s use of the frame-tale as a narrative-generating mechanism, but by drawing whenever it is appropriate the general principles and properties of this time-honoured narrative convention, he goes further, attempting to elaborate, with the help of existing literature on this question, what might be called an aesthetics of the frame-tale.
This book is also a contribution to Arabic Studies. Indeed by dealing with Kitab Alf Laila Wa Laila in conjunction with Barth, and by extension with post-modernist and post-structuralist poetics, the author places it right in the forefront of the present critical and theoretical debate.
يتطرق الباحث في هذه الدراسة إلى تأثر الروائي الأميركي جون بارث بشخصية شهرزاد الأسطورية المتمثلة في معادلة /الحكي أو الموت وإفلاتها من ورطتها المهولة بتوظيفها للاستراتيجية المسماة بـ«التبطين» كتأمين سردي على حياتها.
وقد تجسد هذا التأثر في إعجاب بارث إلى حد الجنون منذ بداية مشواره الأدبي بصورة شهرزاد وهي جالسة ليلة تلو الأخرى على فراش شهريار متأرجحة بين الحياة والموت على شفى حكيها اللامتناهي، ذلك أن النصوص السردية التي صيغت هندستها بشكل مركب والتي أغنى بها بارث الأدب الأميركي، هي في الأصل مستوحاة من هذه الاستعارة ذات الدلالات والأبعاد الأدبية والوجودية العميقة.
ويركز الباحث على توظيف بارث لهذه الاستعارة القوية التي تبلور العلاقة الجوهرية بين الموت والحياة والهاجس السردي عند الإنسان. ووسع النقاش هذا الجانب برجوعه الى نصوص من الأدب القديم والحديث التي توظف نفس الاستراتيجية وذلك لاستخلاص قواعد وأسس هذه التقنية ووضع ما يمكن الاصطلاح عليه بـ«جمالية التبطين السردي».
وهدف هذه الدراسة هو «إعادة النظر في الدراسات الغربية التي لم تعر الاهتمام الكافي لمدى تأثر بارث بكتاب «ألف ليلة وليلة» الذي كان له وقع حاسم على حسه الفني فحدد مشواره الأدبي منذ بدايته».
